Chapped lips drive me crazy! Mine are so sensitive that it doesn’t matter if it is spring, summer, winter, fall, or anywhere in between, it’s chapped lip season. I’ve been like this since I can remember. And what I do remember as a kid is using Chapstick to solve my chapped lips and, guess what?, having chapped lips for years to come! Why? Well, it turns out that the ingredients in those things are the reason you keep using them. Sure they help for the moment, but a moment later you are right back where you started. Something had to change.

I changed! I took all those chemical infested lip balms and threw them away and now my lips are….better. Ok, they aren’t cured And they probably never will be, because that’s just the way lips are.

A quick lip lesson. Lips can’t produce their own oils like most other parts of our skin can. Lips may look great, and are fun to kiss, but those babies need a little help. The reason for that is they lack Sebaceous Glands (link for those you who really want the science here). Most parts of our skin have sebaceous glands, which produce our own oils (called sebrum) that lubricate the skin and protect it. They also go off the handle some times and that’s where acne comes from, but that’s a whole different post. Lips then, need some help. However, what they don’t need, especially those of us with sensitive lips, is mineral oil. Now there is some disagreement here. Some experts think mineral oil is fine for the lips as long as the other ingredients are helpful too. And that may be true. But I know—and many of you know—from experience that mineral oils are just a Band-Aid. They work for the moment and then you are right back where you started with itchy, chapped, unkissable lips.

Ok, enough of the science lecture, right? It’s almost summer and our lips are going to get burned by the sun. What to do? My advice is try mineral oil free lip balms for a few months straight. Give your lips time to make the change if they need it. Your lips will thank you. Below are seven of the best lip balms that I have used that I know work. There is no magic one. We are all different so hopefully some of them are right for you. If I missed one that you know works, let me know!

#1. Blistex Medicated Lip Ointment

Blistex has a unique formula to relieve cold sores & severe lip dryness. It’s actually what dermatologists are advising to use when one has extremely chapped lips. Why? #2. Mustela Hydra-Stick with Cold Cream Nutri-Protective

Here we have an amazing multitasker. It’s a moisturizing stick that protects baby‘s lips and cheeks but that is great for adults either. It glides gently on the skin and provides a protective barrier against harsh conditions such as cold and wind. Paraben, phthalate and phenoxyethanol free. This is a great lip balm that is packaged in an easy-to-use squeeze tube. Its soft texture applies easily and quickly relieves dry, chapped lips with healing plant extracts and fortifying humectants.

#4. La Mer The Lip Balm

Divine texture. That’s what you think when apply it on your lips. But it’s not just a velvety balm that does nothing, it actually and truly calms, restores, and conditions, transforming even the most tender lips.

#5. Bite Beauty Agave Lip Mask

The emollient formula of this rich, balm-like treatment hydrates and prevents moisture loss. It is intended to be a leave-on treatment for replenishing the lips and could be left on lips overnight as a mask. It contains a blend of antioxidants for added benefit.
