What is a setting powder and why do we need it?

Setting powder is a silky, usually translucent powder with a touch of sheer coverage to set makeup for lasting wear, without adding weight or texture. It creates a modern, matte finish with a soft-focus effect to subtly blur the look of fine lines and imperfections. Setting powders will not settle into fine lines or pores and never looks cakey. You can set your foundation or concealer, but it could be used on it’s own or just on top of your sunscreen. All of those powders are also great for ”backing” technique to set makeup under the eyes (when we apply a thick coat of a setting powder on top of our concealer and then dust it off after 10 minutes). You can find setting powders at lots of different price points, but no, you do not have to rob a bank to get a great powder. as there are some amazing budget-friendly ones.

#1. Coty AirSpun Loose Face Powder – Translucent

This is i one of the most popular loose powders in Youtube beauty space right now and I see why as it gives a beautiful finish and it’s super affordable. It comes in a jar of 2.3 oz and there are 6 shades available including translucent one. Great for the whole face as well as for under-eye backing. It is extremely finely milled and I would say that it could be considered as a dupe for Laura Mercier Translucent Powder ($38)

#2. RCMA No Color Powder

OMG! The finish of this powder is amazing: it makes the skin look flawless and poreless without being cakey not in the least. It sets your makeup for the whole day long. It is translucent so it will not add any extra color and will not change the color of your foundation. The shaker contains 3 oz! Nice!

#3. Maybelline New York Shine Free Oil Control Loose Powder

This powder is another dupe of Laura Mercier Translucent Powder: it’s super finely milled and it does not look cakey on the skin. It does give me a matte finish even though I would not call it overly mattifying, so it can be used by those with dry skin as well.

#4. e.l.f. HD Undereye Concealer Setting Powder, Sheer

This powder is a dupe for Laura Mercier Secret Brightening Powder.  They both create the appearance of the most naturally perfected skin, it brightens, lightens, and boosts luminosity in under-eye area. Formulated with light-reflecting micronized pigments, these powders give a soft radiant finish, never settling in fine lines or accentuating shadows.

#5. COVERGIRL Professional Loose Finishing Powder Translucent

This face powder blends beautifully and sets your makeup to keep you looking fresh and natural. Like other setting powders you can wear it alone or use it over your favorite foundation for a soft, translucent look. It helps control shine and it won’t clog pores. Available in shades perfect for light to deep skin tones

#6. Ben Nye Classic Translucent Face Powder

Ok, the price is not that low ( $18) but there are 3 oz in a jar. It’s a beautiful setting powder which gives you a flawless finish and it was used by makeup artists for years (it became popular because makeup artist of Kim Kardashian is using it for her). The range of colors is pretty good, so you can find one that matches your skin tone. There are also smaller packages.

#7. SACHA BUTTERCUP LIGHT. Setting Powder with no white cast.

Did you ever get flashback from a setting powder on photos? This powder will not give that – no flashback, no white cast. It comes in 2 shades: for lighter and for deeper skin tones.
