What are Centella Asiatica and Madecassoside, which are so popular in Korean skincare at the moment?

In traditional and ayurvedic medicine, the herb of Centella asiatica (also known as Gotu Kola or Tiger Grass) has been used for hundreds of years to heal wounds, burns, and help to treat acne and eczema due to its anti-inflammatory properties. Madecassoside is one of 4 compounds of Centella Asiatica.

Both Centella asiatica and Madecassoside are particularly interesting for compromised, irritated, dehydrated and acne-prone because skin like that suffers from the breakdown of the skin’s natural moisture barrier (most often due to over-cleaning, over-scrubbing, mattifying like crazy, using harsh acne treatments or sun damage) and Madecassoside helps to restore skin protective barrier and heal faster. Ultimately, if you have compromised skin with damaged or weakened hydro-lipid film a treatment with Centella Asiatica might be a great option to incorporate into your skincare routine. Here are some interesting products that contain Centella and/or madecassoside to consider trying.

#1. Dr. Jart + Cicapair Cream

I bet this is the most popular cream with madecassoside on the market. Its rich but not overly clogging and absorbs really well. Could it be used under makeup? Absolutely. It’s not too greasy to make a mess of my makeup and it does not ball under my foundation. There’s nothing in it to scare off even those with extremely sensitive skin: no fragrance, no mineral oil, no alcohol. This is my personal must have SOS treatment all year round in case of my skin being pissed off due to long flights, cold winter winds or overusing acne treatments.

#2. A’PIEU Madecassoside Cream

Another great rich cream to bring your skin back to normal healthy state. And again, an array of good ingredients only.  This is my personal must have SOS treatment all year round in case of my skin being pissed off due to long flights, cold winter winds or overusing acne treatments. It behaves great under makeup or sunscreen. Never clogged my pores even when I use it daily over the whole face. On top of it, the low price makes me happy. Another plus is that unlike most of Korean skincare cosmetics this cream does not have Butylene Glycol in the beginning of the ingredient list  (note: Butylene Glycol might be a problem for very acne-prone skin when being used daily).

#3. A’PIEU Madecassoside Fluid

The same great treatment with Madecassoside but in form of fluid, which has a beautiful texture that is more suitable for summer usage or high humidity climates. Absorbs wonderfully, does not leave any sticky residue, plays well with any makeup or sunscreen (or both). If you are anxious to try a product with Centella Asiatica but you are being put of by rich textures this is your choice.

#4. Cicaplast Baume B5 Soothing Multi-Purpose Balm

This cream is all time favorite with all members of my family that we were using for years. It’s formulated with panthenol and glycerin to help nourish and soothe dry, visibly irritated areas on the skin. Even though it’s called balm it has lightweight creamy texture with a rather matte finish that is not overly sticky. I would say it’s best for normal to dry skin. It’s one of my absolutely best chapped lips treatment. I love using it for body and massage into cuticles.

#5. Cosrx Centella Blemish Cream

Really nice cream by Korean brand CosRx which has a lovely texture that absorbs quickly yet feels moisturizing. My only concern is that it’s in a jar, I personally tend to avoid jar packaging, if it’s not a problem for you, give it a try.

#6. Cosrx Centella Blemish Amoule

Another product with Centella Asiatica from CosRX and it might be an option for those who hates the feeling of cream on their face but still wants to try cosmetics with Centella. The ampule has an instantly absorbing runny texture that soaks right into the skin leaving it hydrated and soothed.

#7. Dermalogica Age Smart Super Rich Repair

This a very rich cream, almost like a balm. I would say it’s for dry and very dry skin to restore and revive dull, aging complexions and leave skin looking firm and plum. Madecassoside calms inflammation while genestein fights free radicals and encourages hyaluronic acid production. Colloidal oatmeal, zinc and oat kernel extracts reduce irritation for soft, comfortable skin. The only drawback is that it contains fragrance.
